I've never met another newt fursona IRL, but occasionally I'll see one on the Mucks. Definitely not common though.
I knew foxes and wolves and otters and such were common before I even got into furry, only because I had college friends who were into it before me.

I like the sketches, but it's quite the irony that Daphne Lage made my first sketch when she was the Guest of Honor at the first Albany Anthrocon...yet everyone always comments on the Rhodin one. I wish I had a current link for him. I love what he did...and I shudder to think of how many pencils he must have gone through.
I'd be curious to see what you'd do with Iago or Siphedious. I definltely prefer non-cartoony and non-anime most of the time. Not really sure how that meshes with your style.
