FCL and What Followed
Apr. 21st, 2026 02:59 pmAs much as I was being hyperbolic when I dubbed FCL, "the con of three ex-boyfriends" it turned out to be not especially inaccurate. For better and/or worse.
Pepper: Rooming with Pepper went fine, perhaps better than I expected. He was a Perfect Gentleman(tm), which wasn't surprising, and a long time ago might have been disappointing, but in this time it just...was. If he had any interest in doing anything with me, he never let on, and I would have been surprised if he had. For my part, I wasn't planning to go out of my way to make myself vulnerable to him.
He unexpectedly invited me to grab dinner with him Sunday night, which was nice, though it may have been because he didn't know anyone else still at the con at that point. Still, he didn't have to do that. We went to a burger place that Phaaze had spoken highly of, and that really hit the spot. Pepper actually had to leave the hotel at 4am the next morning to catch his flight (he'd moved it up from later in the day), though amusingly he 'snuck' back into the room because he'd forgotten his headphones. All in all, it was nice to see him, though things definitely didn't feel the way they used to, and maybe that's for the best. While walking to the burger place I kind of went into my frustrations with him, but only at about 50% of what I could have done. It would be nice to think he'd be more receptive now, but I don't know.
Ezen: Eh-zen indeed. Despite 'plans' to grab food on Friday afternoon, we didn't ultimately grab food until Sunday. It was nice enough, but the fact that he'd postponed by 48 hours during a con stuck with me. He was also leaving that day, perhaps not long after we got food, so there were no shenanigans...not that I necessarily wanted any by that point. After telling me he'd let me know if he couldn't attend my panel, he entirely no-showed on it, though he did apologize as soon as he saw me again. I guess part of the confusion was that for him lunch is at noon, while I usually eat around 1:30 or later...especially at a con...this is the kind of thing that we could have sorted out earlier on, but still, he didn't suggest grabbing dinner instead or such either. He did hangout in my room a bit Thursday night at least, and this time he didn't throw out any stupid lines about how he'd already gotten laid. I'm assuming he -did- get laid during the con, and since it wasn't with me...well, I was leery of just being a notch on his bedpost. In the end, it was nicer to see him than to avoid him or not see him...I think...but I'm not feeling much of anything here, and we've barely talked since the con.
Nocturne: Uh, ask again later.
Exeter: Pretty cool guy, and handled his first furry con well. Just a little annoying at times, but only a little. He does kind of make a point of saying how much he's not allowed to fool around. Not my type, which is probably for the best since he's...not allowed to fool around. I'd happily room with him again sometime.
Mykul: SIGH. Okay, last year he was coming on a bit strong, but he was also in the middle of a divorce, and I get rebound. This year though, he was a bit too open about how he was "open for business". Friday night he didn't sleep in our room, which led me to consider that for the rest of the con I'd be hearing about how successful he was. Thankfully it didn't come to that; actually, he's been pretty quiet since he left the con, though as far as I know he had a good time. I may deprioritize him as a possible roommate in the future though. He also had an unfortunate knack of trying to talk to me while I was trying to focus on other things, and sounding like he was just trying to fill silence that I was quite comfortable with.
My panel: More people than I expected, which was nice! But fewer presenters than i would have liked, and most of them only had excerpts that were at most a page long, which made offering feedback challenging. The best work of the evening was probably a poem(!) about being a bartender, written by someone who wasn't even old enough to tend bar, making it all the more impressive. Surprisingly, the panel did run its full length, aided in no small part by my hitherto unknown ability to vamp about writing and editing for an obnoxiously long time.
I'll go into other things tomorrow, perhaps.
